A kame is a glacial terrain feature:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kame
They are commonly found along the margins of glacial valleys where melt
water moved debris.
Actual length varies from short to long (note the conveniently vague
distances <grin>) and depends on the size and length of the glacier(s) that
was associated with the kame formation.  They may be associated with modern
glaciers or remnants/evidence of long gone glaciers.

Simon didn't mention whether he crossed the width or length of the kames
<grin>, leaving that to the reader's imagination and allowing for growth
over time as the legend develops.
