Try removing the power plug from the back of the K3, wait about a minute,
and also close the K3 Utility. Remove all connections from the back of the
radio except the DE-9 serial cable that is connected to the K3 Utility. Then
start the K3 Utility and on the Port tab chose the COMM port that is
connected to the K3. Leave the K3 Utility on the Port tab. It should start
polling, you'll see little messages at the bottom status line. If the K3
Utility pops up a warning dialog (before you apply power to the K3) that
says that it has found a K3 in boot load state, you probably have selected
the wrong COM port; the COM port you have selected is connected to some
other device that is sending back everything that is sent to it. Some laptop
modems do that, some defective cables do that.

Plug the K3's power plug back in and press the power button to turn the
radio on. It should show MCU LD in the LCD screen and the back light will
be dark and only then should you see a K3 Utility warning popup that a K3
has been found and its speed is 38,400 bps. Once you have that, go to the
firmware tab and select "Send all Firmware to K3". See the K3 Utility Help
text for the Port tab to see the expected sequence of screens.

If the K3 Utility doesn't get responses from the K3 it will continue to
poll. It could be a cable, the PC's USB port, or possibly the KIO3 in the
K3. Usually it's a cable issue or an incorrect COM port choice.

What I really think has happened is that the MCU loader is in some state
that prevents it from responding. A full power off reset should correct the
issue and it will go into the state where firmware can be loaded.

There is a trouble shooting section in K3 Utility Help that contains every
resolution we've ever heard of. Look for "Troubleshooting USB to Serial
Adapters". There's also a description of what to expect in the Help page for
the Ports tab.

If you have continued problems, contact k3supp...@elecraft.com; they'll help
isolate the issue with you.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 offline :-(

I can't load the firmware.
The loader (1.2.9.30) keeps responding:
MCU firmware file hmcu0344.hex verified
Sending firmware file hmcu0344.hex to MCU
Send MCU firmware failed at load address x0800
MCU firmware load failed

The display reads MCU LD and the red TX LED is blinking...

Is this a hardware failure?
