Yes, it can be done. The important thing is that TRANSMITTER MUST
BE POWERED ON the whole time while the lithium is changed (while
removing the old and connecting a new). As long as the transmitter is
powered on memory will not be lost when lithium is removed.

A few of hours ago I did what Mike describes. Removed the lithium
battery from the main pcb, and solder on a couple of leads to the
board in order to connect my own battery (or battery holder). Now I
have two leads with standard servo plugs at the end, to which I can
connect and change the battery as much as I like (connect a new
battery to the loose end, and then remove the other) . Also, the new
battery is easy to accessible and measure at any time.

I made a little board out of a fibreglass plate onto which I strip on
a battery. A plywood plate can be used. I got hold of a 2100mAh
lithium with solder lugs, so I used that one. I also have a battery
holder for standard CR123A (2/3 A size) which I can connect (CR123A
lithium are widely available).

Before doing the actual replacement everything must be prepared – new
battery, leads etc., and all tools needed. When everything is ready,
charge up the main transmitter battery. It may also be a good idea to
remove the HF-module (transmitter will draw less power, lengthening
the possible working time - just in case).

Power on the transmitter, and leave it on. The old lithium is
soldered to the PCB. The big lug is the plus pole. To remove the
lithium, pull on the edge opposite of the plus lug, until the minus
lug underneath is ripped off from the battery, leaving the lug behind
on the pcb. The battery must then be cut off from the plus lug, so
have the necessary tool ready. (Cutting of the battery was actually
the hardest part. Everything has to be done carefully without
shorting or harming something on the main board. When the old lithium
is removed, leaving the lugs onto the pcb, leads to connect a new
battery can be soldered onto the lugs. The minus lug seemed a bit
lose so I placed a little solder on its base to secure it. Also,
before solder on the leads, I cut a little notch on top of each lug,
bend the top of each lug both ways to make a split, put lead end in
between and bed back. This will secure the leads and solder better
to the lugs.

Well, that was how I did it.
