It used to work in dired buffers.

Occasionally I happen to hit 'g' and then wanting to look at the
previous state.  In Emacs 21 I used to remove the read-only status of
the dired with C-xC-q and then undo.  This one does not work any more in
Emacs 22.

Or else deleting a file, then wanting to look at its lenght:
toggle-read-only plus undo did the trick.  This one still works.

The old behaviour could be occasionally useful, and had no adverse side
effects that I am aware of.
