That's one of the reasons I'm using a 7i90HD, driving it with spi. The
disadvantage is that in a 5 volt i/o environment, a triplet of 7i42TA's
are needed to protect the 3.3 volt 7i90HD. That was the only Mesa board
when I bought the broken and bent remains of this old 11x56 Sheldon.

But they also give you those neat little green screw terminals to do your
wiring from, instead of figuring out how to make a breakout board work
with 50 pin scsi cables. And it doesn't need any "hats", this is a
direct connection between the pi and an 80 yo Sheldon lathe. That, and
the 7i90HD gives you i/o to throw away, 72 pins total.

Having enough i/o to let your imagination out to play w/o a chaperon is
nice so I have quite a list of goodies on that old Sheldon. No hand
cranks, I drive it with encoder dials. All machine power is controlled
by LinuxCNC. And I still have 30+ unused i/o lines. I recently converted
its stepper drives to these new 3 phase servo's driven as steppers, so
now I have to listen to Casper the ghost as it moves twice as fast as
before. And if they make a mistake, it stops the machine. Rigid
tapping, curves w/o a compound. Stuff it never dreamed of doing when it
was new is now routine. Sweet is not an adequate word.
