I think we should start to think about the 2.9 release. My own feeling is that it should be released once the transition to Python3 is complete.
This will necessarily involve abandoning some of our more ancient distribution support. I am happy to carry on with 2.8 in parallel (because of the above) but would only consider taking on 2.9 in the absence of any other volunteers.
