That would be nice for CAD/CAM systems and Tool Crib Applications.

I believe that a Master Tool List would be useful at least for each machine
or set of machines.

The ini file would have configuration choices.
The default ini file would be:
On each machine, LinuxCNC's tool table would be exported read only.
LinuxCNC would give the operator/setup/supervisor tiered access to read
the Master Tool List.
On the first Cycle Start after Gcode file import into LinuxCNC the
message presented would ask if the tool table should be updated, there
would be tiered access to answer the message. Whether the message answer
would trigger a Master Tool List read or a separate button is required is a
matter of preference. I think I prefer a separate button as the LinuxCNC
tool table access should be purposeful in every way, structured and
confirmed.
LinuxCNC would have rw access to the tool wear and tool length
fields.
Tool description fields would only be done using Master Tool List
module.
LinuxCNC would not be allowed to add tools to the tool table.

The CAM system access would be:
1: Empty Tool Description Fields - rw
               Tool description
Adapter description eg Cat 50, length/diameter of the adapter
Special instructions for tool setup and use
2: Occupied Tool Description Fields - ro

    The Master Tool List:
          1:Is THE tool definition controller
2: Any changes to CAM accessible fields would trigger a message
to the CAM system.
3: Any changes to the 'active' LinuxCNC accessible fields would
trigger a message to LinuxCNC.

Just my USD5.00 contribution (a current 5 dollar bill is roughly worth what
2 cents was in 1913).

regards
Stuart
