I've been working with coreboot since it was still a concept called LinuxBIOS in the late 90's. It's true that you can use it to create firmware for your cpu and chipset to replace the BIOS and have it optimized for low latency. The problem is that Intel was never in support of it and AMD announced last year that they were dropping support for open firmware (open AGESA). So the only new chipsets and cpu's that get coreboot support are those used by Google in their chromebook products. There are some older cpu/apu's that are supported and still in existence but they are a few years old now.
