Sure it is. That's why we have the HAL.
You can basicly use any encoder counter and connect that to the lathe 
threading input. You need an encoder with an index slot though, to sync 
passes.
If you don't have one, you can probably trick it by generating a fake index 
pulse once every n-counts (where n is a full revolution). But this isn't the 
most clean way to do it.
