Hi Andrew I've run EMC2 from a USB stick but it was using one of the smaller distros that had a USB install as an option. It seemed to run fine but all of it was pulled into RAM and run from there.
I also have a stock Ubuntu 6.06 install to a CF chip on one of those IDE disk adapters. I ran some tests on it and concluded that such a system was not ready for the big time using an as-is install. I did not optimize the install or make any of the parts of the file system run from RAM disk. I presume that such a task, properly done would yield a workable system. I've also got a couple of scratch USB sticks in the bin that I tried to build ext2 file systems on and failed. They seem to work properly as long as I didn't try to change partitions or file systems.
