That shouldn't be a problem. Google for ubuntu usb boot. You'll find lots of pages describing the process. USB is fairly slow. I boot off a CompactFlash card instead. I did a howto for CF installation <http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?Install_To_CompactFlash>
