Ok - I just did this one more time.

1-wrote image to nvme
2-booted
3-no wizard so I enabled wifi and sudo apt-get installed piwiz
4-rebooted
5-wizard shows up.
6-ran through the wizard and it re-login as my new user (so the piwiz
worked as expected as bootup)
7-piwiz also ran updates.   Lost linuxcnc boot screen (defaulted to
'welcome to raspberry pi desktop' image.
