RedHat put some weird mojo in their auto* stuff that used some weird
criteria to pick which version to actually run.  Apparently it works a
bit too well....  ;-)

I agree, believe me.  The only one of the auto* tools that deserves a
version number above 1.0 is libtool.  They're a total fucking mess,
and I really hate dealing with them.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything better.  imake is even
worse. :(

Don't sweat it.  I'll beat it into submission again.  I'll probably be
beating a number of packages into submission as I start packaging the
e17/* stuff for caos.
