You may use wicd with wicd-gtk or wicd-kde, knetwormanager, networkmanager or any other network manager, just be sure to disable connman or any other connection manager as they will compete for resources and network won't work.
BTW, while trying to get connman running fine, did you check if wicd or NM was running at the same time? they usually have a start script in /etc/rc.<level>, so that connection manager is started no matter what DE you are using.
