Dear Zaim,

If you can help in anyway, I will be greatful.

Selamat Berpuasa!

STOP ILLEGAL LOGGING IN MANDAILING!

The Mandailing are a people of the north-west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Their
village republics are set amidst irrigated highlands, where paddy, coffee,
cinnamon and rubber are grown. Inspired by a rich mythology, the society is
characterised by a clan and geneological system, egalitarian ethos and
consultative governance (Na Mora Na Toras). The Mandailing people are well known
for Gordang Sambilan (Nine Great Drums) and immense contributions to the
literature and politics of Malaysia and Indonesia.

In recent years, the cradle of this unique knowledge-based ecology has been
ravaged by illegal logging. In the pristine mountainous region of
Mandailing-Natal (MADINA), millions of hectares of forest have been felled and
razed by fire, causing untold damage to the environment in one of the world's
biodiversity hotspots. Many a river in Mandailing are now clogged or dried up,
and flooding is becoming common. The deteriorating water quality is theatening
water life and the human settlements which depend on the rivers for irrigation
and domestic use.

Many roads in Mandailing are now unpassable as logging trucks have irreparably
damage the roads. Local protest has fallen on deaf ears. The logging company has
the backing of powerful forces in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. The local
district administration is powerless in the face of a unitary Indonesia where
power and decision-making is concentrated in Jakarta, in the far away island of
Java.

Mandailing cannot wait for decentralization, regional autonomy or federalism to
take its course. If illegal logging and deforestation is not stopped now, the
Mandailing homeland will be devastated.

We are trying to mobilize national and international support to stop the
logger's chain-saw.
We welcome your STATEMENTS OF CONCERN and any help in terms of contacts,
expertise, funding or logistical support.
