Don't forget that USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, so even if something goes wrong with your 3.0 setup, the "big drive" will work just fine via a 2.0 port. I'm backing up my Macbook Pro (running Ubuntu) onto a USB3 drive connected via a USB2 hub built into my Dell monitor, connected to a USB2 hub in my laptop stand, connected to a USB2 port on the machine. Works fine.
