A nice summary there, Mary and Sheila! I found this bit interesting: "Be prepared to explain the vagaries of the public transport system before you get to the bus/tram stop. (Birmingham buses demand exact fare and you cannot buy a return ticket – but you can buy a day ticket!)" I think the people who do the pricing for public transport are often thinking of their own job security rather than, say, people showing up to use buses, trams and trains for the first time. I stare with disbelief at the out-of-town pricing where I live - just the choice of colours on the zone map make me wonder what people have been taking: http://ruter.no/Global/Bilder/kart/Sonekart.jpg And what is it with exact fare? I remember having to overpay a few times in Edinburgh as well as having to stuff pound notes into the coin slot. I could rant about this for hours.
