I haven't had time to investigate any more at my end for the past few days, 
but hope to spend some time on it (and maybe Figure It Out) this weekend.

Maybe I missed it, but where are these timers defined? It does seem pretty 
consistent that the SIGHUP happens two seconds after the PPP handshake 
starts.
