Are you updating from Cooker regularly?  If so it may be that the src
you have doesn't match your running kernel... this may be the problem.  

look in /usr/src  You should see a directory that looks like

linux-2.4.21pre4-"X"mdk

Where "X" is the version number of the kernel it's source for... IF I'm
right VMware needs this to match the number of the running kernel on you
box.  Make sure it does.  If not it's worth it to install the upgraded
kernel (they have improved it a lot)  also make sure that the symlink
linux points to the src directory that matches your running kernel (you
might have more than one and it could be pointing at the wrong one.
