Art, Q did have a 493, but it is now sitting in a 96 KBS Solo II car that Jeff Martone is driving in the New England Region after his AMW engine died. At the event we had a few weeks ago at Devens, which was a very fast open course, he was only .915 seconds faster than me. This week end at the Tour I think he had me by about 2 seconds on Sunday in the dry before his electric fuel pump gave out. If I can fit into his car he wants me to drive it for a comparison. Will most likely try it at NHIS in August at the Jeff Gordon Challenge if he can make it on Saturday!

We missed all you guys and ladies at the Deven's tour!

Yeah, I know for sure. It was a 494. QRE didn't run a 493 due to the 50#
penalty and won't until it is removed or there are no more legal 494s :-).

McMahan was the only one on the podium with a 493.

Jay,
Now you have me wondering if Brent had a 493 or not. I was told it was a
494 but since I didn't see it myself....maybe someone else knows for sure?

Thanks for the info Jeff. I thought that Mike had a 493 as I thought I
saw him back up on the false grid during one of the sessions. Perhaps
Mike can confirm this.

Thanks ... Jay Novak

Stan,
I know that Novak, Marsh, and Brent were running 494. Wiley McMahan
had a 493. As skinny as McMahan is, it's likely that he needed ballast
to meet the 850lb minimum and probably didn't exceed the minimum by
much. I suspect that Brian Novak didn't exceed the 800lb minimum by too
much either. The small difference in qualifying times between McMahan
at 850lb min (493) and Novak at 800lb min (494) must say
something....but Marsh and Brent were also very fast, and I've been
told that both were way over the 800lb minimum for the 494. I don't
know exact weights, but from impound records, the SCCA surely does.
When evaluating this issue, shouldn't the SCCA consider the actual
weights of the cars/drivers that were driven at the Runoffs rather than
looking at the minimum legal weight?

Jay, can you give us a run-down on who was running 494 and 493 engines
at

the Runoffs? I have no way of knowing who ran which engine. Thanks!

about the 494 vs the 493 engines. I particularly

respect all that Tony has done for F500. I also know that F500 is not

has been

his major business for many years.

I think it is important to look at the qualifying times from the
Runoffs last year & you will see that the 493 with the added 50 lbs is
absolutely equal to the 494. Admittedly Brian Novak turned the
fastest race lap by less than .1 seconds with a 494, but that "super
trick" car is now illegal.
There were several 493s within .1 or .2 seconds in both qualifying &
the race. This indicates to me that the 493 with 50 lbs & the 494 are

extremely close from a competitive perspective.
