Most of the images.* libraries only read in images, but I believe 
"images.bitmap" and "images.tga" can output uncompressed .BMP and .TGA files. I 
know you said you don't want to use external tools, but if you're on Windows, 
Fraps (http://fraps.com/) is really your best bet for capturing frame-by-frame 
movies of OpenGL applications.
