New submission from Stephan Sokolow <ffmpeg.ssoko...@spamgourmet.com>:

The RealVideo 2.0 (RV20) codec is fragile in ways which render some of
the clips in the early the Royal Canadian Air Farce online video clip
archive (Starting with Season 12, they switched to RealVideo 4.0)
unwatchable.

Specifically, they encounter an error of some sort which causes the
video output to shrink and garble and, once that's happened, the only
way to regain video is to stop and restart playback and then seek to
past the error.

Here's one example file which trips up the ffmpeg codec at 8 seconds
in: http://airfarce.com/video/000211fh.rm (ffplay output attached as
requested)

I've tested with the same results on ffplay (0.4.9_p20090201 and SVN
HEAD (r17100 as of this posting)) and MPlayer (SVN-r28450 from the
Gentoo ebuild).

Not all files cause visible problems, but a significant number do.
Also, even the ones with no visible problems usually generate a flurry
of "[rv20 @ 0xbe4560]unknown bit3 set" messages at some point during
playback. (As far as I can tell, the "@ 0xbe4560" part stays unchanged
both within and between all files I've tested)

Keep in mind that some of the troublesome files also break on current
RealPlayer in the same way (though usually in different places) but I
can confirm that CD-R stored copies which mess up on current RealPlayer
worked fine on the Windows RealPlayer of the time back when I burned
them. (RealPlayer G2, if I remember correctly)

The first example video trips up RealPlayer 11 at a very different
point (at least a minute in) and here's one which trips up both ffmpeg
and RealPlayer 11 in the same place:

For more test clips, you can visit http://airfarce.com/video/index.html
(their old video hub was kept intact for posterity) and click on any
episode title annotated with the "Watch the Video On-Line" eye.
(Basically, everything in seasons 7 through 11)
