"archived" is FinkCommander's way of saying that a binary package
exists on your system and isn't installed.
Thanks for the clarification. Once the source packages installed (for
the non-emacs problems with binary installs), they were no longer archived
(see my last email).

The version in the unstable tree seems to work OK.
Worked like a charm, EXCEPT that I actually had to do it this way:
% cd /sw/var/lib/emacsen-common
% sudo touch installed-flavors
(anything else failed with permission denied, even with sudo?)
