I've seen this with Yahoo as well. Someone will sign in "invisible", 
and msg me, and every time I message THEM, I get a "That user is 
offline, do you still want to send the message for when they return?" 
message.

Yahoo and AOL both solve this in their "stock" clients with little 
messages that appear in the IM window "User has signed out", "User 
has signed back in", "user has become idle", etc.
