Sarah Brady Stirs Gun-Purchase Debate with Book
3/27/2002

Gun-control advocate Sarah Brady stirred up controversy when she acknowledged in a new book that she bought a gun for her son, the New York Daily News reported March 22.
Brady purchased the Remington .30-06 rifle in 2000 to give to her son James Brady Jr., for Christmas. Along with the gun, she also bought a scope and safety lock.
The Daily News initially reported that Brady might have committed an offense by buying the gun for someone else, then retracted the assertion.
Although the Lewes, Del., gun shop ran federal Brady Law and Delaware state background checks, Brady revealed in her book, "A Good Fight," that she did not have her son's background checked.
According to Amy Stillwell, a spokeswoman for The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Brady Law does not require background checks for intrafamily gun gifts. Mrs. Brady told the gun dealer that the rifle was for her son and filled out all of the required paperwork, according to the advocacy group.
A spokesperson for the Delaware Department of Justice at first said that state law does not exempt background checks for family gun gifts and said Brady might be guilty of making a "straw purchase." However, the agency later said it had misinterpreted the law.
Gun-rights activists were surprised to hear that Brady purchased a firearm. "It's obviously interesting that Sarah would be purchasing firearms of any kind for anybody, given her championing of restrictive guns laws for everyone," said James Jay Baker, chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association.
