ok, well, on my machine it is aparently fast enough, so maybe this could
be optional. i do see the problem with this taking a long time though.

could this be done in the background somehow?
especially now that the pager is reading from stdin, it could display
the first screenful of descriptions while more is generated, that way it
should be fast enough even on the slowest machines.
