Thanks for the reply.  Strangely enough I still had that set from the old days. 
  However, it doesn't seem to work.  I tried setting it again a few times, but 
it didn't work, i.e.:

     set -g fish_color_search_match blue --background
     set -u fish_color_search_match blue --background

Any tips?  Version 2.1.0.
