For new horse owners... Colic is something you want to prevent at all costs. ALL HORSE OWNERS
Spend the money on good feed and good pasture management,

In addition I would like to add, please, please, worm for tapeworms. 20 percent of the horses in the West have tested for tapes, 80 percent in the East. We have had our problems here in Northern Ca. with tapeworms, It took me 3 years to rid one horse of them. It cost my daughter 10k in vet bills. There are only a few wormers that are effective on the bugers. They can affect your horse in many ways other than colic.

For about 10 dollars you can get a digital thermometer,[Wal-Mart] practice with it a few times, know your horses temperature. Stethoscopes are very cheap, practice on a healthy horse.
