Paul,
I can vouch for the ASUS P5W with the Intel 975X chipset. Not
particularly cheap but far superior performance to my previous AMD
athlon board.
I'm running the P5WD2 with a non-dual core cpu (P-4 HT LGA 775, 3.4 Ghz).
It simply purrs along with 683 feeding a Firebox over 1394. CPU load
averages about 6-9% running PowerSDR in "letter box" mode (@96k). Don't
skimp on the memory for this board. Look at the v/low latency dual
channel (DDR2 800) stuff, as its my understanding that memory
performance is more important than an over abundance in capacity (in
this specific case).

Good luck!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

My pc doesn't seem to keep up with the new UI features. CPU reading
varies a lot, from 50% to 70% generally. Tuning is not responsive as
before with mouse wheel, there's a lot more going on as the display
changes. Popping (or dropouts) in received audio is very noticable,
audio/dsp buffers at 1024/1024. I don't think there's anything wrong
with the software, and I like the new features, but I think it's time for
a new motherboard and cpu.

Here's what I'm looking at:

ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M sharing L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor

Then I need a new case, 500W power supply, new drives, the works. The old
pc gets shoved down to the next desk and becomes the #2 machine.
A new pc like this will just barely keep me afloat for media center and hdtv
as well.
