Rob:

I too would be interested in more detail. What sort of mic amp and limiter do you and where did you get them. Are they commercial or home brew?

Rob,

Interesting your approach to drive balanced audio input. Can you please give more details to get better ssb punch.

I note average power on my 3k and also my 6500 could use some improvement especially if we can maintain that cleAn Flex sound in doing so.

Check the Drive slider control setting. Default value is 50% which yields about 48 watts. Increase it to 100 % for full output.

I get a full 5 watts from my 1500 and have since I bought it 4 years ago. Never a problem.

The Flex folks have been very helpful in setting it up and transitioning to new versions of the software as well. Bob, NZ5A

Picked up a used 3000 and only see 48 watts out. Good mic drive and TXALC. I am sure someone will tell me something that will hit me between the eyes
to get the output up.

Thanks for the help

Good morning to all
I recently bought the Ameritron ALS 600 Auto Amp. I can not load it properly to save my life. As soon as I start to transmit it jumps to "Load Fault." The AMP test well in a dummy load. I know the flex 3000 does not have a ALC connection and I have read and understand the article written that says we do not need an alc connection as it is all done by small incremental drive tuning. But that does not help. I have set the radio up as I have seen on u tube, I have a good match with my antenna using my Palstar antenna tuner. I am very careful with all the mike gain settings. I have gone into the back settings and I do see an ALC setting and I have changed them to recommended settings by the video and other Hams. Is there any suggestions here?? I am fairly sure I have all settings correctly. I will change the antenna soon, (if the darn snow ever stops) although I do not believe that to be the problem.
Thanks

I ran an ALS-600 with a 5000 for a very short time but went back to my
AL-572. The problem was NOT with the Flex, my antenna was just not a good
match without a tuner for the solid state amp. The ALS-600 requires a very
low SWR or it will quickly go into fault.

According to the manual, this is likely caused either by high SWR or
overdriving the amp:

*If the reflected power exceeds 50 watts the power level should be reduced
until the reflected power indicated on the internal meter is 50 watts or
less on peaks. At approximately 75 watts of reflected power the internal
safety circuitry will disable the amplifier.*
SO, 1st, check your SWR.

Roll back "RF Power" - drive - and then gradually increase it until you're
seeing the rated output from the amp. Then stop. Details on page 15 of the
manual.

Bill,? I had this problem twice with my Alpha 8406 amp.? The first time was a bad used Alpha Delta coax switch I had picked up at the Plano Hamcom and the second time?I was in a winter storm and the ice was?essentially shorting out?my beam.??When the weather breaks you may not have a problem at all.? If you are using an antenna switching relay the outside unit could be freezing up also.? Just go through a substitution type troubleshooting procedure and I bet you find?the problem pronto.??? Bill,

I use my Flex 5000A with an ALS-600 and the only time it ever faults is
when I forget to manually set the amp's bandswitch to the correct
frequency range. The first question I would ask is if you transmit into
a 50 ohm dummy load does the amp behave correctly? Since you are using
the Palstar antenna tuner I would assume there is no mismatch, but there
is a possibility that you have RF feedback and an oscillation is causing
the Flex to take off, which the amp will interpret as too much power
appearing on its input. I'd be most suspicious of that scenario.

A second thought is that the ALS-600 doesn't need a whole lot of drive
to make 600 watts PEP so I wonder if maybe you have a peak here and
there that crosses the threshold that the fault circuit will tolerate.
The ALC adjustments on the back panel and front panel of the ALS-600
will have no effect since there is no ALC connection between the Flex
and the amplifier.

Are you using the leveler in PowerSDR? Although it doesn't seem to work
as effectively as a hardware limiter, it might help to control a rogue
peak that sneaks through here and there. After a couple of years of
using the native voice processing within PowerSDR I ended up running my
station's external audio chain into the balanced input on the back
panel. The last active element in the external audio chain is the
compressor/limiter which I use to brick wall the audio peaks so that I
can raise the average audio content much higher than is possible with
the voice processing within PowerSDR. That approach has made a huge
difference in the loudness of my signal with voice modes and has
eliminated the excessive peaks here and there that used to show up and
cause mischief. The ALS-600 seems very comfortable with this approach,
and my AL-82 never flinches no matter what I pour into it with the Flex.

Good luck!

Rob W1AEX
