That is a strong tool in osg.
StateAttributes and state modes deeper in the tree (my wording for closer at
the leafs) replace the StateAttributes and state modes closer at the root.
There are override and protected flags for them, but leave them away for the
first cut.
Those overrides must also be handled with care. IMO these should be used with
extreme care because the might interfere with some effects like shadows where
we need to do multi pass rendering of the same scenegraph with different
override attributes.
I guess that even if there is currently no effect that brakes with using
overrides or protected state attributes, this has the potential to brake
something like that.
Tim, the material animation stuff should IMO try so work without the
overrides.
