OpenBSD is perfectly in the right to leave non-POSIX tools out of the base install. gzip-aware tar isn’t POSIX, either, but it’s been a de facto standard for about a decade now. It’s not just in GNU tar and bsdtar, it’s even in BusyBox and Solaris.
