Anonymous cloning doesn’t help.

Nor should it, since you should still end up in http_ssl.c while cloning 
anonymously over HTTPS.

If the difference between our Pi systems is not the OS version, it is likely 
due to LAN configuration.  I wouldn’t be surprised if my cable router was 
giving out valid IPv6 configurations, even though all of the equipment on the 
LAN that I directly manage is IPv4-only.
