This explains part of the behavior you're seeing: http://www.fossil-scm.org/index.html/artifact/bf160a5c6b8ea2cd?ln=214 Not sure why this was chosen, but ambiguity detection stops at 4 characters (since the beginning as far as I can tell). The rest is probably undefined/buggy behavior.
