Indeed, this happens when your checkout version, or a predecessor, gets
retroactively moved to a branch, e.g. because it was determined that it
doesn't yet belong on trunk.

fossil info will tell you which branch you're on without making any
changes to your checkout area.

I think it's been discussed before whether or not to do more to
proactively alert the user when branch changes happen, though I don't
know how that discussion concluded.
