He was referring to the recent two-revs-back upgrade price: essentially a full
new license.

<Warning: my opinion ahead - YMMV!>

I am old school perhaps, but I _absolutely_ do not like subscription license
models for software. The phrase "death by a thousand cuts" comes to mind. 😊

I never used FrameMaker _all_ the time. I suppose, with a subscription model,
if I had stopped using it for a while, then I _could_, in theory (if I paid
monthly) stop the service till I restarted.

However, for me, the inability to open FM files to even _look_ at them (if I
did not have a current subscription active), would be a poor situation.

In the "way-back-when" past, FM had an upgrade cost that worked for me - every
few years, a $199 to $249 to $279 to $299 price was not too bad, and I kept up
with that (although, as Robert Lauriston once noted, I did not _have_ to
upgrade).

However, that upgraded pricing increased to $399 (I think) ... _and_ if you
were two revs old, the cost became a new license purchase! And, that is
unacceptable - to me, it was a thinly-veiled ploy to force people to switch to
a subscription.

The latest "subscription ONLY model" is the last nail in that coffin, as far as
I am concerned.

Anyway, I will stay at Fm12 ... till it stops working in the future. For short
edits (under a day or two), I tend to use it to change old docs. For longer
edits, I first convert to LaTeX ... just takes a day or two longer.

Ummm, how does $29.95/month or $359.88/year (with the generous 0% prepayment
discount...) translate into "a grand (or whatever)" for a FrameMaker
subscription? Sure, that's pretty steep if you're only working on a single
contract, but it's less than half the single-license purchase price in the
pre-subscription days.
