I don't know if this will help you or not, but why not take a look in the
Developers Handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/

I'm sure there are several other documents out there, but you could review
the source code as well. It can be installed via #/stand/sysinstall, and
it will (by default) be located in /usr/src.

Hope this gives you at least a starting point.
