Right, so it's just about running
sudo raspi-config
and setting audio to HDMI.
Editing sudo /boot/config.txt didn't help me.

hdmi_drive=2
The Raspberry Pi 4B has two HDMI mini-ports. The HDMI port next to the
power port will output audio, the other port does not.

xfreerdp is only an application like any other.
If you use e.g. pulse just set the default output to that.
Same is true for alsa.
The other option is to redirect with your local sound volume control,
but how exactly that is achieved depends on which one you´re using.
