I've finally got 1.5.0-pre1 working (it helps if you upgrade the media package too! Duh!), and have been experimenting a bit. I love some of the new features, while a few others are rather rough, and some I expected are missing.

More detailed feedback:

*I don't seem to get any log of mplayer output in the freevo log dir. (Had a problem which took me a while to figure out, not having any command line to reproduce & test)

*I was hoping the Cart/Tag-list support would be in this release. Wasn't this being worked on?
Ah! Never mind - found it as an inactive plugin. Will test it out later. I still don't like the name (shoppingcart). ^_^

*Making menus smart about remote machines is excellent - although this seems to not work by default. I got it to work by adding the following to my local conf:
HOST_ALIVE_CHECK = '/bin/ping -q -c 1 %s'
Is this what is supposed to be done? A built-in checker would be handy if possible, since there's some delay when it loads ping the first time - and it may cause more delays in some instances, without a short time-out. I suppose even better would be to check these entries after displaying the rest of the menu as a background task, and add to the menu as network status is confirmed.

*Is there an easy way to get DVD menus? (Using Xine?) (I haven't tried to get this working in the past, but can't find any docs on the website about it...)

*It'd be nice to have an easy-set config parameter to scale fonts - maybe a few for setting categories of font sizes? Each new Freevo release I hunt through the skins & tweak font sizes - not impossible, but a little tricky, especially for your average user who may just want to tweak the size.

*Is there an easy way to configure Freevo to use a dir other than .freevo off the home dir? This dir seems to get quite large, so control over where it is (and what info is kept?) would be useful.

*The video Thumbnail feature is - interesting. ^_^ How about using the first thumbnail as the image for the dir if there's no "cover" equivalent found?
Also, how about grabbing a handful (9? 12?) of random thumbnails, and asking the user to pick which one to keep? (That way you're more likely to get something somewhat appropriate...)

*If there's a "cover" for a dir defined, it doesn't seem to let you generate a thumbnail - but if a thumbnail already exists, it's fine.

*How about a feature to not list "empty" directories? ie; those which contain no relevant media files? Some of my dirs have a mix of different media types, and the directory name doesn't always tell me what the content type will be. Not listing empty ones for the current mode would make navigation to actual content easier & cleaner.

That'll do for now. I've yet to throw my box back in the lounge-room & use it with the new Freevo much, so I've yet to test things like the joystick support, etc... All in all though it's quite impressive! Keep up the great work, and a big thanks to all those who contribute towards code, art, etc... Can't wait for the official 1.5.0 release. ^_^
