Finally tracked that down late last night along with the fact that 'display' in freevo.conf should be set to 'directfb'. However a new wonderful error appeared: pygame.error: No video mode large enough for 720x480 I've tracked it down to the SDL code, but still not sure if it is there or in the fact that ivtv does not flesh out a complete framebuffer driver.
