For many front end developers, jQuery/jQueryUI is what they mean when they say "I know JavaScript".
And with more "apps" (mobile) moving to web frameworks (React, say) & Node.js/Linux for services, I'd say there's a healthy bunch of OpenWare out there. Totally agree that the user-facing parts are all in-house. -- Owen
