The Great Chatbot Debate: Do LLMs Really Understand?
https://computerhistory.org/events/great-chatbot-debate/

There's a weird nexus focused upon by concepts like both-sides-ism, dialectic,
[mon|dual]ism, "fallacy bros", etc. What could this (or maybe any) debate
actually do for anyone? It's just stupid posturing. Candidate debates do something.
They're like fashion shows or awards shows, narrowing and fixating our conscious thought
on particular Great [Wo]Men. It's all about the attention ... like we're all Twitch
streamers or Youtubers who need likes and views. That's what these things do. Any other
proposed function is either a purposeful ruse or misguided idealism.

But there's one alternative that's worse, championed by the Lex Fridmans of the world ... I've heard it called
"yes, and", "civility porn", "sense-making", etc.. The idea is to avoid "toxic"
confrontation or contrarianism and treat everyone, including batsh¡t people like Thiel or flat earthers, as if their
opinion carries any water.

[sigh] I'll probably watch the stupid thing. But I won't feel good about it.
