Attention News Editors:

The AFNQL Supports the Conseil des Innus de Betsiamites
WENDAKE, May 13 /CNW Telbec/ - The Assembly of First Nations of
Quebec
and Labrador wishes to express its support to the Conseil des Innus de
Betsiamites on the Order to Safeguard with regards to the forest
exploitation
on Ile René-Levasseur, and is asking the government of Quebec to stop
using
double talk.
The AFNQL is not opposed to the development of the territory and
its
resources. However, the AFNQL always stood firm on the principle that
the
First Nations alone, have the right to decide on their own priorities
regarding development issues which affect the territory and its
resources.
It is within this spirit that the AFNQL signed in June 2003, the
Mutual
Political Commitment with the Charest government. This agreement aims
at the
development of harmonious and respectful relations between the First
Nations
and the Quebecers, in particular on issues linked to the territories
and
resources.
The Regional Chief of the AFNQL, Mr. Ghislain Picard, is
wondering about
the true commitment of the Quebec government. "In the morning, the
Government
of Quebec claims to negotiate in good faith with the First Nations
and in the
evening, it defends the Kruger Company in the case against the Innus
of
Betsiamites", emphasizes the Regional Chief. "The government of
Quebec must
start thinking in terms of the recent rulings of the Supreme Court of
Canada
and instill some trustworthiness in its political approach with the
First
Nations", concluded Mr. Picard.

The Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is the
regional
entity representing the Chiefs of the First Nations of Quebec and
Labrador.
