I typeset my resume and Very Special papers in Adobe Garamond Pro, using
lcdf typetools and otftex_install.py to make the otf accessible from LaTeX.
I recommend http://www.ece.ucdavis.edu/~jowens/code/otfinst/ for a
step-by-step guide.

Once you have the font installed in LaTeX, it's pretty easy to use:
\usepackage[oldstyle]{tfmadobegaramond} in the preamble sets my default
typeface and oldstyle figures, and I use \textln to switch into lining
figures when I need those. I haven't used discretionary ligatures or
contextual swashes in my LaTeX recently, but lcdf typetools supports those
and many other otf features.
