CCAA APPLAUDS SIGNING OF DR-CAFTA

Washington, D.C., August 9, 2004 - Caribbean Central American Action (CCAA) welcomed the signing last week of the U.S.Dominican Republic – Central American Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA) and congratulated the United States, the Dominican Republic, and the five Central American nations for this historic achievement.

“This is an important bond of friendship and mutual growth between the United States and the nations which comprise our 2nd largest trading partner in the Hemisphere,” said James Jacobsen, Vice Chairman of the Kellwood Company and Chairman of CCAA.  “DR-CAFTA is a win-win situation for all of the countries involved.  It opens up markets for U.S. manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, and service providers and it enables companies from the region to compete more effectively in the global marketplace.”

“CCAA urges Congress and the National Assemblies to pass DR-CAFTA this year,” said José Pérez-Jones, Senior Vice President of Seaboard Marine, Ltd. and President of CCAA.  “The benefits that this agreement can produce will be greater the sooner it is implemented.”

“This trade agreement is vital to the creation of resources necessary for promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty in the region”, said Mr. Federico Sacasa, Executive Director of CCAA. “DR-CAFTA will help in Strengthening the Third Border™ and solidifying the mutually beneficial political and economic relationship between the U.S. and its neighbors to the Near South.”

Caribbean Central American Action is a non-governmental organization that promotes private sector-led economic development in the Caribbean Basin. More information can be found by visiting CCAA’s website at www.c-caa.org <http://www.c-caa.org/index.html>.
