Presents:

BARGAINING FOR BETTER TIMES

A seminar by Tom Walker
Shorter Work Time Network (Vancouver chapter)

Tuesday, June 23, 1998
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Simon Fraser University
Harbour Centre Campus Room #1410
515 West Hastings Street
Vancouver, B.C.

Unions and employers are both becoming more aware of the importance of
bargaining around issues of working time. The renewed focus on the hours
of work requires the use of new tools to discover common ground between
labour and management and to clarify potential conflicts.

In the Bargaining for Better Times seminar, participants will carry out an
exercise that highlights the different ways that labour and
management "frame" issues around work time. Tom Walker will then demonstrate
a computer tool for examining the costs and benefits of alternative work
arrangements.

The seminar will wrap up with a discussion of the strategic implications of
using the new tools and the challenges of introducing them into established
collective bargaining processes.

The Bargaining for Better Times seminar is based in part on research funded
by the Institute for Humanities at SFU and in part on research conducted for
the Telecommunications Workers Union.
