According to Bloomberg, Bush has vetoed a bill that would provide health care
to poor children. The legislation, supported by Democrats and many of Bush's
fellow Republicans in Congress, would have added $35 billion over five years to
the State Children's Health Insurance Program, known as Schip. Democratic
leaders have vowed to put political pressure on Republican lawmakers to
override Bush's action.

Obviously, the supporters of the bill don't know there's a war on. The cost of
the Iraq war could top $2 trillion after factoring in long-term healthcare for
wounded US veterans, rebuilding a worn-down military, and accounting for other
unforeseen bills and economic losses, according to a new estimate by Columbia
University economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Harvard lecturer Linda Bilmes. The
estimate far exceeds projections made by the Bush administration. But, hey,
what's important? Gittin the bad guys or fixin-up the kids?
