Nicholas Cusanus Day.
Better, every day, both every work day and every "day off" should
be Nicholas Cusanus Day.
Brad, I'm just a simple economist, and I'm not sure I get it. I don't
understand the "totality" and how I might be a perspective on it. What
little cosmology I've read tells me that we haven't the faintest idea of
what the totality really is and where we are within it. Did it ever begin
and will it ever end? Is it finite or infinite? Is there a single universe
or, as some cosmologists propose, are there an infinite number? I sometimes
long for pre-Copernican times when we knew we were halfway between heaven
and hell! At least then we had a sense of direction!
That's your perspective on the totality. As the new-ageys say:
Be here now.
Philosophy is about the stars only as the stars are part of
the philosopher's life. And Everyman (woman, child...) can be
a philosopher, just be willing to be one -- no credential
needed, no tests to pass -- JUST DO IT! (Of course, being
a tenured philosophy professor is an entirely different,
desirable and difficult thing to accomplish, just like being
homo economicus easy to be but being a tenured professor
of economics is difficult to become, too -- well, it is
a little harder to be a philosopher than to be a
homo economicus, because you have to know you are a
philosopher to be one, whereas to be a homo economicus
only the economists or even just your boss need to know about it).
Did the totality ever begin or will it ever end, etc. -- well
that's all taking place in your thinking about it. Elsewise
there ain't even nuthin.
Be of good cheer! Or, as the Ziegler cartoon goes,
a man is about to put a bullet thru his head, and
his toaster says to him: "You are special! You have a talking toaster!"
