The coming of the welfare state increases the number who "need" welfare. Now everyone gets privileges, from the poor who get food stamps to the middleclass who get tax relief on to the rich who enjoy privilege in quantity.

I agree.  Whenever people are given a way out
of conditions that do not appeal to them, they
will take it, just like steam will eacape
thru a safety valve, or, in a town where the
churcdh offers refuge, all the "wanted" will
be in church.  One could call this the Nadir
Principle, after Ralph Nadir (spelling intended as
written) who said that
if Bush got elected that might motivate the
liberals to get off their duffs.
