Shouldn't that be 'gnome-session-save'?  It is on my Ubuntu system.  
Also, do you have the box 'Automatically save changes to session' 
checked in the 'Session Options' tab in System -> Preferences -> 
Sessions?  I guess that runs gnome-session-save when you logout.
